I got the Cathy Doll Lip Blur in 06 Rose Apple (P199.00 at Watsons/ SM Department Stores) from Nikki Tiu of AskMeWhats.com when I attended her Perfecting Your Base Workshop. I was happy when I learned that Cathy Doll Philippines was one of the event sponsors. It’s a relatively new Korean-inspired brand from Thailand, marketed by Karmart and here in the Philippines, Lifestrong Marketing. I’ve seen their eye-catching displays at several Watsons and SM Department Store branches, and I’m curious if their products are worthy of the hype. They have a good range of skin care and makeup products ranging from the Korean staple CC cream, to liquid lipsticks, to underarm toners and slimming lotions. Their prices are pretty affordable, too.
I love lippies but sadly, I have really dry lips that tend to get chapped very easily. I only ever used tinted lip balms before, but now a lot of brands are really stepping up their lipstick game! I’m ready to give this new liquid lipstick a go. Here are my thoughts:
Safety: I checked this product’s ingredient list over at cosdna.com and found that it didn’t raise any red flags. One pigment even showed up as a sunscreen with UVA and UVB which was a pleasant surprise, as the product didn’t indicate an SPF. I’m not sure if the other shades have this particular pigment, though. Fragrance was also listed as an ingredient, but third from the last–meaning it doesn’t contain that much. I personally didn’t detect any, so I think it won’t irritate even those with sensitive noses.
Sturdiness: I don’t usually go for lip products with this kind of packaging, where you twist the end to dispense the product at the tip. Once the mechanism gets broken for whatever reason, there’s no way to access the product inside without getting messy! In this case though, I like that it’s transparent, since you can see how much you still have left. Others have an opaque body that can be deceiving.
The first time I used this product, I had to twist and twist and twist for a few minutes–and still got nothing. When it did finally ooze out, too much came out (see blurry, unfocused photo above). The cap does fit securely over the tip, but some product still leaked out. Since the product is creamy and very pigmented, this can potentially make a real mess in my purse! For that, I’ll give it half a star.
True to Claims: On the box:
A Flocked Foam head lipstick for the result of natural perfect lip which gives off a smooth feeling and it also blends easily! Semi Matte texture comes with Lip Blur innovation which assists in concealing, blurring and fading off lip’s line (Cracking lip) resulting in a natural beautiful lip. Rich in moisturizer that nourishes lip and gives off a healthy lip look.
It also boasts of a “Blur Technology” which I thought was kind of funny. I found myself imagining a bunch of passionate, nerdy scientists hell-bent on finding the perfect lipstick consistency for lip flaws. LOL. Anyway, it does have a semi matte finish. I don’t know about the latest blur technology (haha) but it did soften my chappy lips. It went on smoothly on my lips and the color didn’t skip while applying. It feels light on my lips–I even forgot I was wearing lipstick!
I took the photo above three hours after application, and after a coffee break at that. It does fade and is not transfer-proof, but the color wears off evenly. It also leaves a stain even after a meal. My lips never felt dry, in fact it feels like a nourishing lip balm. So yes, the product does make good on its claims.
Value for Money: This is one of the cheapest liquid lipsticks available locally–only P199.00 per tube. It contains 2mL and comes in 7 shades. I think it’s a steal! Still, i wish they would come out with more colors–the current shades available are brighter than my usual go-to shades.
Availability: Right now, it’s available only in Metro Manila. According to Lifestrong Marketing website:
Cathy Doll is available at Watsons (SM San Lazaro, SM Fairview, SM Manila, SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM Southmall, Robinsons Ermita and Watsons Market! Market!). Also available at SM Makati Department Store Beauty Section, SM Aura Supermarket, Robinsons Department Store (Ermita, Metro East, Festival and Magnolia).
I really, really hope they expand their presence–both online and in physical stores nationwide. I think they just might give Western brands a run for their money.
Ethically Made: It’s not noted on the packaging if the product was tested on animals. Their other products do have that note, so I don’t know whether to assume that they don’t use animal testing for all their products, or that they don’t use animal testing just for those specific products with the note. Their ingredients definitely are not all natural. The packaging says it was formulated in Korea, but has no info on where it was manufactured. I’ll give it half a star.
TBG-Approved: I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable, non-drying semi-matte liquid lipstick. This worked for me, someone who has dry, chappy lips. I think even those who have full lips would appreciate this, since it’s not overly glossy.
FINAL TALLY: 5.5 out of 7 stars
